CHAPTER 12

T he next morning, Zion washed her face and hands in cold water, then pulled her hair up into a messy bun. If they didn’t get power soon, she was going to have to head back to the Acorn hotel just to get a proper shower and wash some clothes.

Everything smelled of smoke—the bed clothes, the clothes in her closet, even the towel she used to dry her face. They’d tried to air out the house when they got home, but Zion knew everything was going to have to be washed before the smell would finally fade.

She wandered out to the living room, missing Cleo racing ahead of her for her food bowl. She found David folding the blankets she’d given him so he could sleep on the couch. She offered him a warm smile.

“Morning,” she said.

“Morning. I heard Tate leave earlier.”

“Yeah, he went to his house to open the windows. He didn’t want to leave them open last night.”

“Makes sense. I dread going into my place. I’ll bet everything has to be washed.”

“That’s what I’m thinking.” She rubbed her lower back. Moving all the tables and chairs out of the Caffeinator had strained her muscles. “How about a cup of coffee? I know Vivian kept an old tin coffee pot in the cabinet.”

“Sounds good.”

Zion started for the kitchen. “Is Zephyr up yet?”

“Yeah,” said David, following her. “She got a call and stepped out into the backyard to take it.”

Zion peered through the kitchen windows. She could see Zephyr sitting on the picnic table, her feet braced on the bench. She wore a flannel jacket that Zion recognized as Tate’s. The temperature must have dropped during the night.

Pulling the coffee pot from the cabinet, she began filling it with water.

David took a seat at the table, tapping his fingers on its surface. “What’s the plan for today?”

“Probably same as yesterday.”

“Tate said he’d go over to my place with me, but to be honest, I don’t have much there. I moved most of my clothes and stuff over to Rebekah’s place.”

“I’m sure he’ll go over there with you, if you want to get some things.”

David looked down, fingering a gouge in the wooden table surface. Zion wasn’t sure what to do, so she grabbed the coffee and began spooning it into the pot.

“I’m not sure about going to Rebekah’s,” said David.

“Don’t you have a key? I have one if you don’t.”

“I have a key, but I’m not sure she’d appreciate me going there.”

Zion turned to put the coffee pot on the stove, but realized there was no power, so there was no way to turn on the burner. She settled the pot on the counter and went over to the table, taking a seat.

“David, I think you need to talk to her. She said she didn’t want to break up.”

David stared at Zion. He was handsome in a polished, refined way, his brown hair neatly parted on the side and combed back from his forehead. They’d had some nice times
